Manufacturing News: An Update on AI and Pharma Manufacturing
While AI is increasingly used across pharmaceutical functions — from clinical trials to process design — it has been slow to impact manufacturing. According to an article from Pharma Now, a magazine focused on the pharmaceutical and biopharma sectors, AI could make a difference in two primary stages of pharma manufacturing: production and quality control.
AI can offer several advantages throughout the production lifecycle, the article said: predictive maintenance, process optimization via digital twins, coordination of interdependent processes, real-time monitoring, and waste reduction and sustainability. On the quality control side, AI can enhance defect detection and ensure batch consistency.
Despite these potential benefits, the adoption of AI in pharma manufacturing is a work in progress. Major barriers include the complexity of managing and protecting massive volumes of sensitive data, as well as navigating strict regulatory and compliance requirements.
