More of A Good Thing

How Jason McGlynn and ASG Europe help clients solve problems faster

ASG Europe, which opened in Dublin, Ireland, in 2024, supports medical device companies throughout Europe and the United States. The team extends ASG’s engineering and consulting capabilities in Europe while working closely with U.S. colleagues. Headed by Jason McGlynn, ASG Europe’s team of engineers and consultants help clients reach their goals. Metrology consulting is one of the team’s specialties. I spoke with Jason to learn more about the work he and his team are doing in Dublin.

What’s the story behind ASG Europe?

I met Doug when I was still with West Pharmaceutical Services. We crossed paths in a technical capacity, and I thought: “This is someone I can learn from.” I met Doug again while I was with the Sempre Group, and talked about his vision for ASG Europe.

ASG Europe began with the relationship between Jason McGlynn and Doug Koeneman.

I had the technical and business experience to help him set up the office in Dublin, so it was a good fit. I ultimately joined ASG because of Doug, his vision and thought leadership. I saw an opportunity to grow and do something I could really enjoy. It was a chance to work with someone like-minded. His expertise complements mine. Doug leans on me for the metrology side of things, and I lean on him when I need help finding a solution for a client. Our business and technical work is incredibly collaborative.

How has ASG Europe evolved since its founding in 2024?

Our team has been growing quickly, but we’re still a small team and titles don’t mean much to us. When a project comes up, it’s all hands on deck no matter what someone’s official title might be. We all trust each other to chip in and help out. We’re always looking for the right people to strengthen the team.

The Dublin team brings a deep bench of talent to ASG’s clients worldwide.

ASG Europe has been about trust since the very beginning. There’s real risk when you register a business in the first place, not to mention the trust Doug and our initial clients placed in us. There was no guarantee we’d succeed, but we did. A lot of that success came from the trust and relationships between our teams in the United States and Europe and our clients. Thanks to that strong foundation, we’ve been on the right track from the very beginning.

What services does ASG Europe provide?

We’re part of the same ASG team and bring the same problem-solving approach to clients in Europe. We provide engineering and consulting support across the medical device lifecycle, helping clients solve complex problems through development, verification and commercialization.

Metrology and testing are enabling capabilities. They help us reduce uncertainty, understand what is happening technically and solve the larger problem a client is facing.

A key differentiator is the ASG Studio, an engineering environment for metrology, testing, tooling and device evaluation. The Studio helps clients answer technical questions, generate objective evidence and make informed engineering decisions. ASG Studio capabilities also support much of this work. Everything we do in the Studio, including metrology, is there to help answer engineering questions and support better decisions.

Several of our team members bring experience that’s unique to ASG Europe. That includes our Principal Tooling Engineer, Mark Beard, and Shane Verdon, who has expertise in device assembly. Metrology is a particular strength of ASG Europe.

What experiences did you bring to ASG?

The 10 years I spent at West were really the foundation for what came later. I worked on both product development and manufacturing, and by the time I left, I’d been doing a lot with metrology. I learned so much in that niche. People may not realize it, but metrology can play a role throughout medical device development. A plastic part is just plastic until it goes through verification. By that I mean: A part may look straightforward, but until you measure and verify it against its requirements, you don’t really know whether it will perform as intended.

Dublin team members bring experience that’s unique to ASG Europe. Mark Beard specializes in tooling.

During my time at West, the company grew from about 140 people to 650. It was a fantastic training ground for me. We worked on devices for multiple pharmaceutical clients, both as a contract manufacturer and in development. We worked with different cultures, devices and markets. That variety exposed me to a wide range of technical and business challenges.

I later helped establish the Irish office for Sempre, which provides products as well as contract measurement and inspection services. It was there that I really honed my business leadership skills, applying what I’d developed during my MBA at DCU alongside my technical engineering and metrology expertise. I gained a new perspective at Sempre, deepening my understanding of metrology and its capabilities, while also building valuable experience in running and growing a business.

I developed relationships with clients across Ireland, running open days where they could visit our office, meet the technical experts and see our metrology capabilities firsthand. I also made a point of visiting clients across the country myself, building a strong network across a range of industries and regularly exhibited at industry conferences to raise our profile.

Can you tell me a little more about metrology?

Metrology’s everywhere in medical device development. Whether you’re developing a product from scratch or supporting a commercial product in production, metrology is involved. Typically, it’s tied to quality. It helps you know whether or not you’re making a good product. Often, quality testing comes into play after manufacturing has decided the best course of action. If measurement or verification happens too late, teams may discover problems only after a lot of time and effort have already been invested. Because of that, metrology is often considered a burden rather than a productive element of the development or production of devices.

When I was at West, the metrology department was part of the quality function, and that’s where it typically sits in most companies. I moved West’s metrology department under development. If metrology takes place earlier in the project lifecycle, teams can use that information earlier to make better engineering decisions and address issues before they become larger problems. Verification is an essential part of medical device development, so moving metrology earlier in the process makes things much easier later on. I brought this attitude with me to ASG Europe. Our right-first-time mindset fits naturally with this: bringing the right information into the decision early enough to prevent problems later.

How does ASG Europe partner with ASG USA?

ASG is very collaborative. Our U.S. and European teams work together based on the expertise and resources each project needs. Our teams and their capabilities are designed to complement each other. This gives ASG the ability to work internationally. We can have a team working on the European side of a project while colleagues support the work in the United States.

ASG Europe is joining the U.S. team in working toward becoming ISO 13485 certified.

This collaboration and integration help clients get their products to market faster and at a lower cost.

Because we have such a variety of skills and the experience across medical device development and commercialization, we have the ability to say: “Hey, just talk to us. What’s the problem you’ve got? We’ll help you find a solution.” And then we can intervene through an assessment to understand what resources we could deploy to provide support.

What’s an average day like at ASG Europe?

I know it’s cliche, but every day is different. There’s huge variety in what our team works on every day, but the core of our work is solving client problems and helping them navigate complex technical challenges. The real reward for me is knowing our work is ultimately patient focused.

Some of Jason McGlynn’s experiences at Sempre, including hosting open days, have become part of ASG Europe’s culture.

By helping clients achieve their development goals, we’re helping get their products to market, and ultimately into the hands of the patients who need them. We might be one small part of a much larger effort, but it’s meaningful when I see one of the kids on my son’s football team wearing the device I helped develop 10 years ago with Abbott Diabetes Care.

What do you see in the future?

Our team wants to create more opportunities to directly interact with potential clients. It’s exciting to meet clients face to face and show them our technology and what we can do for them. Our Open Day events have been great for this.

We’re also following in the footsteps of our ASG team in the United States and working toward becoming ISO 13485 certified. Certification will further strengthen the quality framework supporting our work and give clients additional confidence when they rely on ASG Europe. This increases our value beyond just being able to do a CT scan and gather data. It gives us certified credibility. For clients in Ireland and across Europe that combination of engineering expertise, metrology capabilities and a strong quality framework gives us an opportunity to provide support that goes well beyond simply collecting measurement data.
