Room to Grow

How ASG helps young professionals like Saoirse Gibbons thrive

Internships open doors. They help young employees discover what they’re passionate about. They offer opportunities for learning new skills and honing others. They foster connections and meaningful relationships. That’s why mentoring — and internships — are a foundation of our culture at ASG.

Saoirse Gibbons has spent the past several months as a business support intern at ASG Europe, the Dublin-based European arm of Indianapolis-based Adjutant Solutions Group. The new location adds resources and a dynamic team to support current clients as well as new ones in both the United States and Europe. In her role as intern, Saoirse does all she can to help her team thrive. I recently spoke to Saoirse about what it’s like to support ASG Europe. She shared what she’s learning and how she’s helping her team grow.

What do you love most about your internship?

There’s always something new and exciting happening. My role gives me a wide perspective of the business world, which has been really cool. The fact that I’m not doing one specific thing is very special. It’s marketing one day, business development another day, then finance and engineering the next day.

When I started at ASG, I realized that what I’d learned in college was actually just the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much more! I’m never afraid to ask questions because the atmosphere is very open. I’ve been thrown in the deep end, but I’ve learned how to swim.

What’s a typical day like?

I’m always kept on my toes, which is great, because I love learning new things. There’s something new and exciting every day. Here’s a perfect example: We recently hosted an open day (open house) for our metrology services at our office, where people visited in person to see what we do. Before the event, I helped spread the word about our business in Dublin and beyond. The other day, I traveled across the country for a convention. Not everyone gets to do that in internships. Another big part of my role has been helping with finances: bookkeeping, accounting and curating financial reports.

What makes your role unique?

The fact that I’m doing so many different things and I’m not tied down to one role has been very special. All of my friends are doing one small thing in their internships. They’re going to know it really well and get really deep into one sector of a business. ASG is different. I get to do a little bit of everything, and I experience more. I also get to have a global business experience, working with teams in both Ireland and the United States. And, because we’re a small startup, we’re not tied down to titles and roles. There’s a lot of flexibility.

What led you to ASG?

I found out about my position through our general manager, Jason McGlynn. It came up during a family

gathering. Jason is my uncle. I was talking about college and third year internships, and he encouraged me to apply at ASG.

Working with family makes starting the role less daunting, because you have a sense of familiarity, but it can also sometimes add extra pressure to perform well so you don’t let down your boss. Because Jason is family, I want to make him proud. Working for a family business creates a strong support system. The team is close-knit.

ASG is known for its focus on mentoring. Who are your mentors?

Jason mentors me in everything. Mostly he teaches me the ropes and gives me

insights into engineering and the medical device industry. I come from a business background, but this industry was completely new to me; I needed to understand the context. Mark Beard, our principal tooling engineer, has been really helpful in that area, too.

Meagan Koeneman, our marketing and business development leader, and our office manager, Erin Stultz, both help with other aspects of the business, from social media communications to bookkeeping and accounting software. Business-to-business communication is new to me, and I’ve been learning how to communicate professionally. Now I can openly and confidently talk about the business and what we do.
