Reconstructed human tissue models are beginning to replace animals for irritation testing.
New research shows that using reconstructed human epidermis models for irritation testing is an acceptable replacement for intracutaneous irritation tests on rabbits. This new tissue model can detect the presence of strong skin irritants at low levels, making it a suitable alternative to testing on animals.
ASG’s resident expert in biocompatibility, Rylan Wolfe, says this is one example in an ongoing effort to move away from animal testing while maintaining patient safety. “This test method is currently approved for individual chemicals, but there’s work to qualify and regulate it for use in the medical device field,” he says.
