Innovation at Work: Converting BiPAP Machines to Ventilators in New York
A team of doctors and respiratory therapists at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City have successfully converted a sleep therapy machine into a usable ventilator for COVID-19 patients.
After scavenging for parts and 3D printing new ones, a team of NYC medical professionals successfully converted a sleep apnea device into a ventilator that can be used on patients with COVID-19. Doctors say the converted BiPAP can be used safely on about 50% of ventilated patients. This is because the machine doesn’t generate enough air pressure to help some of the sicker patients.
Dr. Charles Powell says the innovation is “a rather simple solution to a complicated problem.”
At ASG, we celebrate that kind of innovation.
