How synthetic genes help fight COVID-19
New synthetic gene material created by scientists at NIST can improve the accuracy of diagnostic tests for COVID-19.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) creates standards that support technologies – both large and small – and scientists and engineers across the nation rely on its measurements. Now, NIST is working to develop a more accurate and reliable diagnostic test for COVID-19. Researchers at NIST have developed non-infectious synthetic gene fragments from the virus that can be used to measure and improve the sensitivity of diagnostic tests. These advances can help manufacturers produce quicker and more accurate tests that are easier to administer.
